Laurie Hernandez is stepping up the podium once again.
The Olympian has served as an official commentator during the 2024 Paris Olympics, providing insight into women’s gymnastics amid an impressive year for Team USA.
And as expected, on Aug. 5, Hernandez weighed in during the surprising beam final, which featured Simone Biles and Suni Lee each suffering from unexpected falls that led to them not receiving medals.
After a fan praised Hernandez’s commentary from the event on X (formerly Twitter), she replied, “Thank you—pointing out deductions is not criticism of the athletes. should be a given that we think they’re brilliant for even being out there! it’s explaining why Andrade might’ve gotten 4th with a hit routine vs Yaqin winning silver even with a .5 deduction for almost falling.”
During the beam final, Italian gymnast Alice D’Amato won gold with a score of 14.366, while Zhou Yaqin of China earned silver and Italian gymnast Manila Esposito walked away with bronze.
Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade landed in fourth place with less than one-tenth of a point away from earning the bronze medal, despite having a flawless performance on the beam.
Hernandez, who took home a gold medal and silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics alongside Biles, MyKayla Skinner, Gabby Douglas, and Madison Kocian, has been loving her new gig as a commentator.
The 24-year-old even expressed an interest in voice work and continuing in the drama field.
“My gratitude is above and beyond for the chance to share the love, the heartbreaks, and the wins,” Hernandez wrote on Instagram. “Thank you to @nbcsports for trusting a chronically online Olympian-turned-drama major to hold this role with tender hands and a funny heart.”
And while Hernandez is soaking up the joy of the games, she had no problem previously calling out the online haters.
"Had such a blast commentating the competition tonight," she wrote on X, on July 30 after Team USA's Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Lee and Hezly Rivera won the gold medal. "What a night!!"
Hernandez added, "Also- everyone is entitled to their own opinion (obviously), but if the opinion related to me and is unkind, please don’t tag me in it (contrary to popular belief, I do see it)."
